Choose El Rey León for a familiar story

Our editorial recommendation is El Rey León if your group wants to begin with a story it already recognises. The animal puppetry and ensemble provide a strong visual reason to go. Knowing the film can help visitors prepare, but Madrid’s songs and dialogue are in Spanish. Think about the youngest person in your group and the length of the evening, rather than choosing only because the title has a family association.

Choose Wicked for the witches and the story

Wicked is the more natural starting point if Elphaba and Glinda, the score or the questions about friendship and reputation are your main interest. Following Spanish will help with its humour and narrative detail. The stage production differs from watching the film. If your group wants to understand every exchange and nobody speaks Spanish, discuss that limitation before choosing either musical.

The venue changes your evening plan

El Rey León plays at Teatro Lope de Vega on Gran Vía. Wicked is at Nuevo Teatro Alcalá on Calle de Jorge Juan in Salamanca. That makes dinner, hotel location and transport a real part of the comparison. Do not book a restaurant near one venue after buying tickets for the other. Start with the actual show time and address, then choose a meal that leaves room for admission.

Compare seat value rather than entry price

Select the same travel date and a comparable seat position before judging which is better value. A low-price upper or restricted-view seat and a central stalls seat are different purchases. Check stairs if anyone has limited mobility and check whether adjacent seats are actually available for your group. Neither this comparison nor a category label promises a particular sightline.

Age rules and a realistic time budget

Stage recommends El Rey León for ages 7 and up; ATG recommends Wicked for ages 8 and up. Read the minimum-admission rule separately from the recommended age. Published running times are 2 hours 45 minutes including an interval for El Rey León and around 2 hours 30 minutes plus an interval for Wicked. Add travel, arrival and exit time to your plan. Confirm the selected session before buying.
