Best musicals in Madrid: compare shows and book tickets

Updated

Choose a Madrid musical by story, performance language, venue and the people coming with you. Compare five bookable titles without mistaking a familiar name for the same production you saw elsewhere.

Reviewed 2026-10-03 · How we research our guides

El Rey León for a familiar family story

Start with El Rey León if your group knows Simba’s story and wants large-scale puppetry. The Madrid production is in Spanish, so familiar characters help with preparation rather than removing the language difference. Our choice is based on that combination of story recognition and visual staging, not a claim that every family will prefer it. Read the recommended age and the separate admission rule, then compare seats for the actual performance. A child who enjoys the film may still find a long theatre evening tiring.

Wicked for Oz fans and a different theatre district

Wicked is a useful alternative when the witches, friendship and the score are the main reason for going. It is performed at Nuevo Teatro Alcalá in Salamanca, rather than at a Gran Vía venue. That makes it a different evening plan as well as a different musical. Visitors who know the film should still read the stage-show synopsis, since a screen adaptation does not establish the pacing or content of a theatre production. Compare the venue journey before choosing an early meal.

Los Miserables for drama and a demanding story

Choose Los Miserables if your group actively wants a dramatic musical and is comfortable with a long, emotionally intense performance in Spanish. A familiar song is a reason to explore the show, but it is not enough to establish whether the whole story suits a first-time visitor or a child. The Teatro Apolo location works with an evening around Tirso de Molina. Put the confirmed curtain time into your plan first, then decide whether dinner fits better before the show or earlier in the day.

Querido Evan Hansen for a contemporary musical

Querido Evan Hansen is aimed at a different evening from a light sightseeing activity. Its story deals with belonging and the consequences of a lie, so think about themes as well as age. The announced Madrid run at Teatro Rialto begins on 23 October 2026 and continues to 29 November 2026. This is an upcoming choice on our review date, not a promise of performances today. Check the selected date on the booking page and discuss the story before buying for a younger group.

El Alma al Aire for Alejandro Sanz songs in a staged story

El Alma al Aire is an original musical built around Alejandro Sanz songs. Choose it for those songs being interpreted within a theatrical story, rather than expecting a concert by the artist. Its Teatro Ocaso Coliseum setting fits a Gran Vía evening, but the inclusions of premium tickets still need to be read separately. If two people in your group know the music and two do not, share a short synopsis and talk about what each person hopes to get from the evening before choosing.

How to turn the shortlist into the right ticket

Narrow the choice to two titles, then compare the same date, the exact theatre and equivalent seat positions. A cheaper advertised entry price is not a like-for-like comparison with a central seat at another show. If language is the main uncertainty, read our guide to Madrid musicals without Spanish before deciding. If stairs or younger children matter, resolve those questions with the venue first. Madrid theatre booking questions

Are these Madrid musicals performed in English?

The five musical productions compared here are Spanish-language choices. An English guide or translated booking page does not imply English dialogue, subtitles or surtitles.

Which Madrid musical is best for a first visit?

Our editorial starting point is El Rey León for a group that knows the story and wants visual staging. Wicked, Los Miserables and the Spanish-original titles may fit other interests better. Compare language, themes, ages and venue before choosing.

Is WAH the same as a Madrid musical?

WAH is a separate music and entertainment format at IFEMA. It is not a story-led musical at one of the Gran Vía theatres. Its food options and transport plan should be compared separately.
